Smog in Lahore AQ Crisis – Punjab Cities Hiting Alarming Levels

Smog in Lahore has reached critical levels, turning the city’s atmosphere into a health hazard for millions. Over the past few days, the provincial capital has recorded dangerously high Air Quality Index (AQI) readings, with some areas like Sivil Secretariat and Iqbal Town crossing AQI 440. The thick haze blanketing the city is making it increasingly difficult to breathe, drive, or carry out daily activities without risk.

This dire situation has been exacerbated by polluted winds blowing in from India, which are further tainting the air. Residents are suffering from respiratory problems, eye irritation, and throat discomfort — all clear indicators of exposure to toxic air. Health experts are sounding the alarm, urging people to wear masks, steer clear of outdoor activities, and limit travel unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Other major cities in Punjab are also facing serious challenges. Gujranwala has become the most polluted city in Pakistan, with an AQI of 521, followed by Faisalabad at 377 and Multan at 270. These numbers are well above safe limits and pose significant health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with existing health issues.

In response to this crisis, the Punjab government has initiated a province-wide crackdown on pollution sources. So far, 22 cases have been filed, and several individuals have been arrested for breaching environmental regulations. Authorities are keeping a close eye on industrial emissions and vehicle pollution, implementing stricter measures to tackle the issue.

This smog emergency is more than just a seasonal nuisance — it’s a public health crisis that requires immediate action. Without long-term environmental reforms and regional collaboration, Punjab’s air quality could keep deteriorating, putting millions of lives at risk.
