Pakistan match delayed U.A.E Asia Cup referee dispute

Referee Andy Pycroft Controversy Delays Pakistan’s Asia Cup Clash Against UAE

Dubai: On September 17, 2025, Pakistan’s crucial Asia Cup match against the UAE faced a one-hour delay after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) called for the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft. This request stemmed from concerns over a controversial “no-handshake” incident that occurred during their recent game against India.

The issue began when Indian players opted not to shake hands with their Pakistani opponents, both before and after the match, a move that many linked to the ongoing political tensions between the two nations. The PCB accused Pycroft of not upholding the spirit of sportsmanship and formally asked for him to be replaced for the tournament. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) turned down their request.

Meanwhile, the UAE team arrived at Dubai International Stadium on time and completed their training as planned. In contrast, the Pakistani squad stayed at their hotel until they received the go-ahead to leave. The match was ultimately rescheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. local time, an hour later than initially planned.

PCB chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi led the charge, explaining that the decision to delay the match was made after discussions with the Asian Cricket Council and former PCB officials.

This clash has the potential to overshadow the group stage matches in the Asia Cup, raising important questions about the role of referees, the influence of politics in sports, and the future of fair play.
