Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir recently referred to overseas Pakistanis not as a “brain drain,” but as a “brain gain,” highlighting their role as a source of pride and dignity for the nation.
While addressing the Pakistani community abroad during his visit to the US, he dismissed the negative connotations often associated with talented nationals who have sought opportunities in other countries. He emphasized that these individuals share the same passion for Pakistan as those who reside within its borders.
During an engaging session, COAS Munir encouraged the diaspora to maintain their confidence in Pakistan’s promising future and to play an active role in attracting investments back home. Field Marshal Munir also participated in significant discussions with senior political and military leaders during his official trip to the United States.
In Tampa, he attended the retirement ceremony for General Michael E. Kurilla, the outgoing Commander of the United States Central Command (Centcom), as well as the Change of Command Ceremony for Admiral Brad Cooper, as reported by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). This visit follows his earlier official trip to the US in June, where he had a luncheon meeting with President Donald Trump.
Since the army chief’s recent visit, Pakistan and the US have successfully reached a long-awaited trade agreement. Trump himself confirmed the trade deal on social media, stating that both countries will “work together on developing their massive oil reserves” and are currently “in the process of choosing the oil company” that will lead this partnership.
Field Marshal Munir noted that Pakistan’s prosperity is closely tied to the global Pakistani community, whose commitment to their homeland is well-documented. He pointed out that overseas Pakistanis have always been the first to respond to calls for help during natural disasters.
On regional matters, Field Marshal Munir remarked that while India aims to position itself as a “Vishwa Guru” (world leader), this ambition is far from the truth.
