Every year on October 24th, the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir gather to celebrate 24th October Foundation Day of Azad Kashmir, or Youm-e-Tasees as it’s known locally. This day commemorates the establishment of the Provisional Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir back in 1947. It stands as a powerful symbol of the people’s unwavering determination to live with dignity and freedom. For Kashmiris, it’s a day to reaffirm their commitment to the ongoing struggle for the complete liberation of Jammu and Kashmir, with hopes of uniting with Pakistan.
Struggle and Sacrifice
Jammu and Kashmir is often hailed as one of the most stunning regions in the world, renowned for its snow-capped mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and lush valleys. However, beneath this breathtaking beauty lies a tale of pain and resilience. From 1846 to 1947, the Muslim-majority population endured harsh oppression under Dogra rule. Yet, they never lost sight of their dream for self-determination. Their courage and faith kept the spirit of Azadi alive through generations.
As 1947 drew near, Kashmiris became increasingly aware that their right to choose their future was being denied. On July 19, 1947, the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference passed the Resolution of Accession to Pakistan in Srinagar, expressing their desire to join a homeland that resonated with their religion, culture, and values. Unfortunately, conspiracies were already brewing to annex the state to India. In response, the people of Poonch and nearby areas ignited a freedom movement that would alter the course of history.
The Birth of Azad Kashmir
After months of fierce fighting and sacrifice, the freedom fighters managed to liberate a significant portion of the state from Dogra and Indian control. Then, on October 24, 1947, in the town of Pallandri, they announced the formation of the Provisional Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan elected as its first president. This moment marked the birth of Azad Kashmir — a government forged by the people, not imposed by force.
According to the principles of partition, Muslim-majority regions were supposed to join Pakistan, while those with a Hindu majority would align with India. However, the Dogra Maharaja made an illegal accession agreement with India, which many viewed as a betrayal. This led to a continued struggle for the people. Despite facing one of the largest and most advanced armies in the world, the people of Kashmir stood resolute for their land and beliefs. Eventually, when India couldn’t quell the movement, it turned to the United Nations, promising that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would determine their future through a free plebiscite — a promise that remains unfulfilled even today.
Over the years, the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir have endured one of the longest military occupations in modern history. More than 250,000 Kashmiris have given their lives in the fight for freedom. Yet, despite the presence of hundreds of thousands of Indian troops in the region, their spirit of Azadi remains unbroken. International organizations like the United Nations, OIC, Amnesty International, and the European Parliament have consistently voiced concerns about human rights violations. Nevertheless, the Kashmiri people continue their peaceful struggle with remarkable patience and unwavering faith.
Celebrating the Foundation Day of Azad Kashmir today
People across the region celebrate the Foundation Day of Azad Kashmir today with pride and unity. Flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural events, and speeches pay tribute to the sacrifices made for freedom. The government, following the announcement of Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq, organizes state-wide celebrations that embody national spirit and solidarity for the people of occupied Kashmir. The Foundation Day of Azad Kashmir serves not only as a remembrance of history but also as a renewal of hope — that one day, the light of complete freedom will shine over all of Jammu and Kashmir.
