The first car in history to be able to change between 32 different colors is the BMW i Vision Dee. The concept car has 240 separate segments that can change patterns and shades in a matter of seconds thanks to cutting-edge E Ink technology, giving it a futuristic appearance that has never been seen before.
The technology functions similarly to an e-reader. Millions of microcapsules are contained in a unique film that covers the car’s exterior. The white and black pigments inside each capsule react to electrical signals to instantly change the surface’s color.
BMW used the iX Flow model, which could only switch between black and white, to test this concept initially. With a wide range of colors and intricate patterns, the i Vision Dee goes one step further.
BMW claims that the color-changing feature could enhance energy efficiency in addition to style. For instance, a darker color could help absorb heat in the winter, lowering the need for air conditioning and increasing driving range, while a white car would stay cooler in the summer.
BMW is investigating the potential applications of this technology in upcoming vehicles, even though the i Vision Dee is still a concept with no production schedule. The invention demonstrates BMW’s efforts to integrate smart technology, sustainability, and design in the automotive sector.
