Islamabad: In accordance with the 27th Amendment to the Constitution, the National Assembly has approved the Army Act 2025. This law designates the Army Chief to serve as the Chief of Defense Forces for a five-year term. The Army Act 2025 amendment bill has been approved by the National Assembly. In Pakistan’s military and parliamentary history, this represents a dramatic shift. The proposed Army Act states that the Army Chief will supervise the reorganization and integration of all military branches in his capacity as Chief of Defense Forces. On the Chief of Defense’s recommendation, the Prime Minister will name the Commander of the National Strategic Command. The Commander will serve a three-year term, with the option to be reappointed for an additional three years.
Additionally, the amendment declares that as of November 27, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee position will no longer exist. The appointment of the Chief of Defense Forces will remain in effect for five years after the notification date, according to Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar. The Chief of Defense Forces will be appointed by the Prime Minister, and their term will start as soon as they are appointed.
The Pakistan Navy Act and the Pakistan Air Force Act 2025 have also been amended by the National Assembly in addition to the Army Act. A unified command structure for the future is indicated by the removal of the phrase “Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee” from these laws.
This development establishes a new course for Pakistan’s defense system in addition to defining the authority of the military leadership. According to analysts, the amendment will improve military coordination and increase the effectiveness of national security decision-making.
