Today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a high-level security meeting to address the growing tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where clashes have been on the rise over the past week.
As reported by both officials and the media, this meeting was prompted by the worsening security situation at the western frontier. Senior officials from civil, military, and intelligence sectors are set to provide updates on the latest developments and the overall state of the border.
This decision comes in light of intense exchanges of gunfire between Afghan and Pakistani forces at various locations, including the Torkham and Chaman border crossings. These confrontations have resulted in civilian casualties, led to temporary halts in trade, and necessitated the evacuation of several communities near the border.
The United Nations has reported that at least 18 individuals have lost their lives and over 360 have been injured due to the recent violence since October 10. A temporary ceasefire has been established to facilitate humanitarian access and medical aid for those impacted by the conflict.
Officials have accused militant groups operating from Afghan soil of targeting Pakistani security posts, which has triggered a robust response from Pakistani forces.
