Karachi News Update | September 10, 2025 Once again, torrential monsoon rains have brought life to a halt in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, during the night on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. The heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, swept away vehicles, and, tragically, claimed the lives of at least three people, with several others still unaccounted for. Relief and rescue operations are in full swing, with the Pakistan Army, Rangers, and Rescue 1122 collaborating with local authorities to assist those in need.
Tragedy in Gadap Town
One of the most tragic incidents occurred in Gadap Town, where a rickshaw and two cars were swept away by the swollen Konkar stream. Rescue teams confirmed the recovery of three bodies, including 60-year-old Bano, her son Raja, and another resident, Javed Shah. Four more individuals are still missing, with search efforts continuing despite strong water currents hampering overnight operations.
In another incident, police recovered the body of a 60-year-old man near Manora Salehabad Jaba Jetty. Authorities are yet to confirm his identity as no documents were found on him.
Overflow of Thado Dam and Urban Flooding
The situation worsened when the Thado Dam overflowed after continuous rainfall, causing floodwaters to submerge the Super Highway (M-9 Motorway) and paralyze traffic. Water from the dam entered Scheme 33, Saadi Town, Sohrab Goth, and nearby localities, forcing residents to spend the night in fear as their homes and streets were inundated.
Several areas, including North Karachi, Liaquatabad, PECHS, Sharah-e-Faisal, Buffer Zone, and New Karachi Industrial Area, also experienced severe waterlogging. Panic spread late at night as the Lyari River overflowed, sweeping away multiple vehicles. Rescue teams later retrieved submerged cars and continue efforts to remove a Hiace van still stuck in floodwaters.
Army and Rescue 1122 Lead Relief Efforts
In response to the emergency, Pakistan Army personnel were deployed within hours. Troops worked with Sindh Rangers and local police to evacuate families, clear waterlogged areas, and restore traffic on key routes. In Saadi Town, at least 350 residents were moved to safer locations through coordinated efforts of Rescue 1122 and the Army.
Deputy Commissioners of East and Malir personally supervised rescue work, while Assistant Commissioner Keamari led the relocation of 100 residents trapped by floodwaters. In Gulshan-e-Iqbal, two individuals stuck near the Lyari River were safely rescued after a difficult operation.
The Sindh government also took the extraordinary step of breaking a section of the central barrier of the M-9 Motorway to allow floodwaters to pass through. Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed continuous monitoring of water flows and assured that all resources are being utilized to minimize damage.
Rainfall Statistics Across Karachi
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Surjani Town received the heaviest rainfall at 129.8 mm over 24 hours. Other major readings included:
- Gulshan-e-Maymar – 93.1 mm
- DHA Phase VII – 90 mm
- North Karachi – 72.2 mm
- Korangi & Gulshan-e-Hadeed – 55–69 mm
Heavy showers were also recorded in Kemari, Orangi Town, Nazimabad, and Bahria Town, leading to widespread waterlogging and disruption of public movement.
Power Outages and Safety Concerns
Despite the chaos, K-Electric (KE) reported that over 1,975 out of 2,100 feeders remained functional, and power was restored in many affected areas including North Nazimabad, Korangi, Shah Faisal Colony, and Gulistan-e-Johar.
Unfortunately, three electrocution incidents were reported in Ayub Goth, Khawaja Ajmer Nagri, and Shah Faisal. KE officials clarified that these incidents were linked to unsafe internal wiring and electricity theft, urging citizens to observe safety measures and avoid handling electrical equipment in wet conditions.
Schools Closed and Traffic Diversions
All schools in the Karachi Division have been ordered shut until further notice. Meanwhile, traffic police have implemented diversions:
- Vehicles from Hyderabad to Karachi are being redirected to Model Road.
- Karachi-bound traffic toward Hyderabad is diverted back inside the city via Sabzi Mandi cut.
- Authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation as citizens brace for more rainfall.
